Fatherland Day, Defender of the Fatherland Day. Hi, everyone! It’s me Katya and today, we’re going to be talking about Defender of the Fatherland Day. Have you ever heard about this holiday before? Well, that’s how it sounds in Russian. Here, it’s День защитника Отечества (Den' zashchitnika Atechestva). So here we go! |
(Den' zashchitnika Atechestva) “Defender of the Fatherland Day” |
It used to be called the Day of the Soviet Army, and before that, it used to be called Red Army Day, yes. So depending on times and armies, it was changing its name. So now it’s Defender of the Fatherland Day. |
The example…“Tomorrow is the Defender of the Fatherland Day.” (Zavtra Den' zashchitnika Atechestva.) |
2. воинская обязанность (voinskaya abyazanast') “military duty” |
After Valentine’s Day, we have this holiday, Defender of the Fatherland Day, so it’s kind of considered to be a man’s day because before, only guys were in the army. Usually, we give presents to men at work like for example, not your lovers, but just your male friends. Like for example, leave a bar of chocolate or something not too much, but to show your attention like you care about them. Because this holiday is also connected to the army so women who are serving in the army also get celebrated on this day. |
(Vy prakhadili voinskuyu abyazanast'?) “Did you go through military duty?” |
3. служить (sluzhit') “to serve in the army” |
For example… “I never served in the army.” (Ya nikagda ne sluzhil v armii.). |
4. могила неизвестного солдата (magila neizvesnava saldata) “tomb of the unknown soldier” |
In Moscow, on this day, people lay flowers and reds in front of the tomb of the unknown soldier monument and usually, you follow this procedure with a minute of silence and you remember people who passed away or were killed during the war. |
(My planiruem pasetit' magilu neizvesnava saldata.) “We are planning on visiting the tomb of the unknown soldier.” |
5. вооруженные силы (vaaruzhonye sily) “armed forces” |
Stay with the force! вооруженные силы (vaaruzhonye sily) “armed forces” |
“The armed forces of the Russian Federation were established after the dissolution of the Soviet Union.” (Vaaruzhonye sily Rasiyskay Federatsyi byli sozdany posle raspada Savetskava Sayuza.) |
