| It should sound similar to 'sheep', but instead of using the tip of the tongue, use the middle part of the tongue to create the 'sh' sound. Also, it should be pronounced further back behind the gum ridge with the middle part of your tongue raised to the roof of your mouth. Listen to (host name) again. |

| The T in the first example uses a hard pronunciation due to the hard sign, while the second uses the soft pronunciation because of the soft sign. We covered hard and soft consonants and palatalization in lesson 7. |

| Did you remember to devoice the final consonant? The final consonant in the first example should be pronounced as an F, while the second should be pronounced as a P. Many Russian words have a tendency to devoice the final consonant, so don't be fooled! They are pronounced differently to how they are spelt. |

| Could you identify which syllable was stressed? If so, you would've identified that *this* vowel's pronunciation changes when it appears before the stressed syllable. This is the rule number 1 of vowel reduction in Russian, which we learned about in the previous lesson. |
