INTRODUCTION
Yuriy: Hello and welcome back to RussianPod101.com. This is Lower Beginner season 1, lesson 18 - Talking About Family in Russian. I’m Yuriy.
Elena: А я Елена. Привет. I’m Elena.
Yuriy: In this lesson, you'll continue to learn about the dative case.
Elena: The conversation takes place at Lera's home.
Yuriy: The speakers are friends, so they’ll be using informal Russian.
DIALOGUE
Лера:Алекс, хочешь я покажу тебе наш семейный альбом?
Алекс:Конечно.
(few seconds later..)
Aleks: Konechno.
(few seconds later..)
Lera: Vot. Eto moi roditeli, otets i mat'.
Aleks: Skol'ko let tvoyemu ottsu?
Lera: Pape uzhe pochti 65.
Aleks: Ne mozhet byt'! On tak molodo vyglyadit! I ty pokhozha na nego, kak dve kapli vody.
Lera: Spasibo. My seychas ne chasto vidimsya, ot sluchaya k sluchayu, tak kak on zhivot v drugom gorode. No ya ochen' skuchayu po nemu.
Aleks: Mne tozhe inogda grustno bez moyey sem'i.
Лера:Алекс, хочешь я покажу тебе наш семейный альбом?
Yuriy: Alex, if you want, I can show you our family album.
Алекс:Конечно.
Yuriy: Of course.
(few seconds later..)
Yuriy(A few seconds later...)
Лера:Вот. Это мои родители, отец и мать.
Yuriy: Here you go. These are my parents-my mom and dad.
Алекс:Сколько лет твоему отцу?
Yuriy: How old is your dad?
Лера:Папе уже почти 65.
Yuriy: Dad is almost 65.
Алекс:Не может быть! Он так молодо выглядит! И ты похожа на него, как две капли воды.
Yuriy: No way! He looks so young! And you look like him—like two peas in a pod!
Лера:Спасибо. Мы сейчас не часто видимся, от случая к случаю, так как он живёт в другом городе. Но я очень скучаю по нему.
Yuriy: Thank you. We don't see each other often-only from time to time, as he lives in another city. But I really miss him.
Алекс:Мне тоже иногда грустно без моей семьи.
Yuriy: Sometimes I'm sad without my family, too.
POST CONVERSATION BANTER
Elena: I can really sympathize with Lera. I also miss my parents when I’m away from them.
Yuriy: Family takes an important place in the lives of ordinary Russian people.
Elena: That's true. But you know, nowadays women are becoming more independent, especially in the financial sense, and they don't need so much care from their parents or husband.
Yuriy: So Elena, should a Russian man pay for a woman at a restaurant or, for example, at the theater?
Elena: If he wants to have a relationship, then yes. If he doesn't, he'll be considered greedy. And I guess most women don’t like greedy men!
Yuriy: Ok, but what about expensive things, such as a holiday somewhere? Should he pay 100%, or can they share the cost?
Elena: I think the situation is the same. Of course, it depends on the circumstance and the people, but sometimes even friends pay in a cafe for their female friends. It's normal.
Yuriy: I see. Then I guess I need to take more money than I had expected!

KEY VOCAB AND PHRASES
Yuriy: Let’s take a closer look at some of the words and phrases from this lesson. The first phrase in this lesson is…
Elena: ...от случая к случаю, which can be translated as “from time to time” or "once in a while."
Yuriy: Elena, let’s translate each word of this phrase.
Elena: Ok. The noun случая was put in the Genitive case and means a "case" or "instance," whereas the preposition от means "from," and another noun, случаю, also means "case," but was used in the dative case. Finally, the preposition к means "to."
Yuriy: So this phrase means the same as the English phrase "from time to time". We use this phrase when we want to emphasize that something happens irregularly or seldom. Let’s give some examples.
Elena: - Вы часто видитесь? - Нет, от случая к случаю.
Yuriy: - "Do you see each other often?" - "No, from time to time" Great! What's the next key phrase for this lesson?
Elena: The next key phrase is быть похожим на.
Yuriy: Which can be translated as “to look like,” and requires a noun in the accusative case.
Elena: Don’t forget to change the word похожим to match the gender and number.
Yuriy: For example...
Elena: Она похожа на свою мать.
Yuriy: "She looks like her mother." Do you have another example?
Elena: Мне кажется, что он похож на знаменитого певца.
Yuriy: "I think that he looks like a famous singer." For more examples and explanations please check the lesson notes. Okay, now onto the grammar.

Lesson focus

Yuriy: In this lesson, we’re going to learn about the dative case in Russian.
Elena: In lesson 17, you learned that we use the dative case to indicate the recipient of the action.
Yuriy: The dative case is also used for expressing someone's age. In this case, the person whose age we're talking about should be put in the dative case. For example.
Elena: Мне 25 лет.
Yuriy: "I'm 25 years old." Another example is...
Elena: Сколько вам лет? - Мне 19 лет.
Yuriy: - "How old are you?" - "I'm 19 years old." The dative case is also used to express someone's mood, feelings, or physical state.
Elena: As a rule, in such grammar structures, the short form of adjectives should be used.
Yuriy: Now let’s see how personal pronouns change in the dative case. "To me" or "for me" in Russian is...
Elena: мне
Yuriy: "to you" or "for you"
Elena: тебе
Yuriy: "to him," "for him," "to it," or "for it"
Elena: ему or к нему
Yuriy: "to her" or "for her"
Elena: ей or к ней
Yuriy: "to us" or "for us"
Elena: нам
Yuriy: "to you (in plural)" or "for you (in plural)"
Elena: вам
Yuriy: "to them" or "for them"
Elena: им or к ним
Yuriy: OK. How about an example meaning "to me."
Elena: Мне больно.
Yuriy: "I feel pain." Now how about one for "to him."
Elena: На улице мороз, и поэтому ему холодно.
Yuriy: "There's frost outside and he feels cold." OK, now one for "to me" or "for me."
Elena: Мне интересно, о чём ты сейчас думаешь.
Yuriy: "I wonder what you're thinking about now." Now, the dative case is also used in the grammar structure "I like/I don't like." Let’s break down this phrase.
Elena: Мне is the pronoun “I” put in the dative case.
Yuriy: So…If we put the pronoun Я in dative case it will be Мне. Now let's return to our grammar structure. The pattern is—pronoun or noun in the dative case, plus the verbs нравиться or не нравиться in the appropriate form, plus object in the accusative case or verb in the infinitive form. For example.
Elena: Мне нравится черный кофе.
Yuriy: "I like black coffee." Elena, let's explain it a bit.
Elena: Good idea. So Мне is the pronoun "I" in the dative form, whereas черный and кофе are an adjective and noun put in the accusative case.
Yuriy: What’s another example?
Elena: Тебе нравится это пальто?
Yuriy: "Do you like this coat?"

Outro

Elena: Okay and that’s all for this lesson! For more examples and information, please check the lesson notes.
Yuriy: Thanks for listening everyone. See you in our next lesson. Bye!
Elena: До скорого встречи!
