In this lesson, you’ll learn how to give your e-mail address in Russian.

For example, "My e-mail address is milena@innolang.com." is

Milena Maslova is at city hall registering her address.

A civil servant is asking for her email address.

Before you hear their conversation, let’s preview some of its key components.

Let's break down the conversation.

Do you remember how the civil servant says,

Let’s start with адрес (adres), "address." Адрес . Адрес.

In Russian, all nouns have grammatical gender and are either singular or plural. Адрес is masculine and singular — a fact that determines the form of one more word in the sentence.

Next is электронной почты (elektronnoy pochty) meaning "e-mail." электронной почты.

Let's start with почты (pochty), "mail." Почты . Почты.

Почты (Pochty) is the genitive form of the feminine noun почта (pochta), "mail." Почта.

Почты (Pochty) is in the genitive case because it's adding detail to the noun адрес (adres).

This form of the genitive case is similar to the way "of" is used in the English "department of economics," "secretary of state," or "game of thrones."

Before this is электронной (elektronnoy), "electronic." Электронной . Электронной.

Электронной is from the adjective электронная (elektronnaya), "electronic." Электронная.

Note, электронной (elektronnoy) is genitive and feminine to agree with почты (pochty).

Together, it’s электронной почты (elektronnoy pochty). This literally means "electronic mail," but it translates as "e-mail." Электронной почты.

All together it's адрес электронной почты (adres elektronnoy pochty) literally "address of electronic mail" but translates as "e-mail address." Адрес электронной почты.

Before this is ваш (vash), meaning "your” in this formal context. Ваш.

Now, you might be more familiar with твой (tvoy), an informal word for "your," as in твой адрес электронной почты (tvoy adres elektronnoy pochty), an informal way to say "your e-mail address." As this is a city office setting, the formal form, ваш (vash), is more appropriate.

Because адрес (adres) is masculine singular, ваш (vash) is masculine singular to agree with it.

All together, Ваш адрес электронной почты (Vash adres elektronnoy pochty). "Your e-mail address." Ваш адрес электронной почты.

Last is пожалуйста (pozhaluysta), meaning "please." Пожалуйста . Пожалуйста.

All together, it’s Ваш адрес электронной почты, пожалуйста. (Vash adres elektronnoy pochty, pozhaluysta.), literally, "Your address of electronic mail, please" but it tanslates as "Your e-mail address, please."

Before this is мой (moy), "my." Мой . Мой.

In this sentence, мой (moy) is masculine singular to agree with адрес (adres).

Together it’s Мой адрес электронной почты (Moy adres elektronnoy pochty). "My e-mail address." Мой адрес электронной почты.

Next is Milena’s e-mail address: milena@innolang.com (m, i, l, e, n, a собака, innolang, точка, ком). (m, i, l, e, n, a sobaka, innolang, tochka, kom).)

Note how Milena says her e-mail address.

First is Milena’s name spelled out. M, i, l, e, n, a.

Next is the "at sign," which is собака (sobaka) in Russian. Cобака . Cобака .

Note, собака (sobaka) originally means "dog," but translates as "at sign" in this context.

After this is the domain name, innolang, pronounced in Russian. Innolang.

And last is точка ком (tochka kom). "Dot com." Точка ком . Точка ком.

All together, it’s Мой адрес электронной почты milena@innolang.com (m, i, l, e, n, a собака, innolang, точка, ком).) (Moy adres elektronnoy pochty milena@innolang.com (m, i, l, e, n, a sobaka, innolang, tochka, kom).), literally "my adress of electronic mail milena@innolang.com," but it translates as "My e-mail address is milena@innolang.com."

The pattern is

Мой адрес электронной почты E-MAIL ADDRESS. (Moy adres elektronnoy pochty E-MAIL ADDRESS.)

"My e-mail address is E-MAIL ADDRESS."

Мой адрес электронной почты E-MAIL ADDRESS.

To use this pattern, simply replace the E-MAIL ADDRESS placeholder with your e-mail address.

Imagine your e-mail address is polina@innolang.com. (p, o, l, i, n, a, собака, innolang, точка, ком).

Say

"My e-mail address is polina@innolang.com."

Did you notice how Мой адрес электронной почты (Moy adres elektronnoy pochty) was omitted?

When directly responding to a request, it’s often possible to omit part of the response.

Here by simply giving your e-mail address, there’s no need to say Мой адрес электронной почты (Moy adres elektronnoy pochty), "My e-mail address is…"

The pattern is

E-MAIL ADDRESS.
