| We have already covered so many aspects of the Russian language as well as culture in the previous lessons. This is the last lesson of our Russian in Three minutes video series, so we will learn different ways to say goodbye in Russian. It is sad to say goodbye, but the phrases themselves are super useful. Are you ready? Then let’s start. |
| The formal and most common way to say “goodbye” is До свидания. |
| [slowly] До свидания. |
| It literally means “till we meet again”, but it doesn’t mean that you are going to meet again soon. It’s just a common formal or neuter way to say “goodbye.” You would say it to someone you don’t know well, or in situations that call for a certain degree of formality. |
| There are another two equivalents of the phrase “till we meet again” or “see you” and They are: |
| До встречи. |
| Увидимся. |
| These are less formal and can be used with your friends, colleagues, neighbors and so on. The phrase “Увидимся” is very informal and you don’t want to use it if you are not planning on seeing your friend again. |
| The other informal and very useful phrase is “Пока”. You’ve heard it a lot from me. I would recommend using this phrase in informal gatherings with your friends. I usually say this word twice Пока! Пока! to sound a bit cuter! |
| There are two other phrases for informal farewells: |
| Ну Давай! or |
| Бывай! |
| We use these a lot. The first phrase is a shortened expression from the phrase |
| Ну давай прощаться which means “Let’s say good-bye to each other.” The second one “Бывай!” means “Drop by some time” |
| The equivalent of “Good night” in Russian is Спокойной ночи. |
| [slowly] Спокойной ночи. |
| You say it when somebody goes to bed or is getting ready for sleep. “Спокойной” means “quiet”, and “ночи” means “night”. Literally it means “Have a quiet night.” |
| Now, how about we learn how to wish “good day” to somebody? There are several expressions for this too. |
| Хорошего дня. is “Have a good day.” |
| Всего доброго. is “All the best.” |
| Удачи. is “Good luck.” |
| I think these are worth knowing. |
| Now it is time for Svetlana’s tips. |
| If you leave a Russian house after some event, in most cases the host will serve you a shot of some alcoholic drink for your safe trip home. We call it на посошок. It is only referred to the last serving of a drink to see off a person. The tradition to drink на посошок came from the ancient time when wanderers left the house with a crook, посох in Russian. He would place the shot of vodka on top of the crook, на посох, and try to drink it without spilling over. If he made it, Russians believed that his trip would be successful and safe. So be ready for that last shot before you leave. Hа посошок!!! |

I think you can just say: "Спасибо, я не пью алкоголь" (thank you, I don't drink alcohol), and it will be enough. Now many peoples follow a healthy lifestyle, many peoples do sports and don't drink alcohol too, so nobody will be offended.

In my country, their is lot of traditions that include drinking alcohol, and I find it a little harder to look polite and social for someone who don't drink alcohol at all. I need to be careful to avoid offensing my hosts or my guests when I refuse to drink alcohol, most often I can achieve it by explaining my reasons and replacing the alcohol by an other drink, so I can participate in the tradition, but for some french people it's still not as good as if I had drunk the traditional drink.
Is it the same in Russia ? And how can I politely refuse to drink alcohol ?

lesson 25 has some problems. video has some screen hangings till 03:00. and after that, vşdeo plays little more and freezes. when i click to play button , it starts from 00:00
