| Erik: A dialogue between two people saying goodbye. |
| Anna: This conversation takes place at an airport, between two friends. |
| Erik: All right, let’s listen to the conversation. |
| Anna: We are going to listen three times. The first time, at the natural native speed. |
| Erik: So you can get used to the Russian used in the real world. |
| Anna: The second time, nice and slow. You saw that you can follow and pick up the words and pronunciation. |
| Erik: And the third time, at natural native speed with the translation, so you can fully grasp and understand the conversation. |
| Anna: Okay, so let’s listen then. |

| Erik: Пока, до встречи! |

| Erik: Пока, до встречи! This time, natural native speed, with the translation. |
| Anna: До свидания. |
| Erik: “Goodbye.” |
| Anna: Пока, до встречи! |
| Erik: “Bye, see you soon.” |
| POST CONVERSATION BANTER |
| Anna: This conversation is really useful. It’s simple, and very common. |
| Erik: That’s right. It can be used whenever you’re saying goodbye to a friend. |
| Anna: But the interesting thing is that there are two goodbyes in there. The first one, До свидания. is formal, and the second one Пока, до встречи! isn’t formal. So we have the best of both worlds. |
| Erik: We certainly do, Ana. Okay, let’s take a look at the vocabulary and key phrases for this lesson. |
| Anna: First, I’ll give you the word at natural native speed. |
| Erik: Then, I’ll give you the English equivalent. |
| Anna: Then, I’ll break down the word by syllable. |
| Erik: So, that you can catch everything. |
| Anna: And say it right away. Then, I’ll give the word one more time at natural native speed. |
| Erik: Okay, ready? |
| Anna: Yeah. |
| VOCAB LIST |
| Erik: The first word is? |
| Anna: До свидания |
| Erik: “Goodbye.” |
| Anna: До свидания. До свидания |
| Erik: So Ana, this is the polite form of saying “goodbye”, right? |
| Anna: Yes, but we can use this with friends as well. |
| Erik: So what do we have that can be used when we’ll see people soon? |
| Anna: We can say До скорого. or До встречи. |
| Erik: “See you soon”. Can you help us break this one down? |
| Anna: Okay. До скорого, До скорого |
| Erik: Okay, and that literally means “Until soon”? |
| Anna: Right. |
| Erik: Okay. “See you soon”, great. Ana, is this also formal? |
| Anna: Actually, this is informal compared to До свидания. |
| Erik: Okay. What about a really informal way to say “goodbye”? |
| Anna: Okay you can say Пока |
| Erik: It’s my favorite way to say. |
| Anna: Right. Mine too. |
| Erik: So let’s break that down real quick. |
| Anna: Okay. Пока, Пока |
| Erik: And it just means “bye”. |
| Anna: “Bye”. |
| Erik: You can use it with friends and family as well, right? |
| Anna: Yes, that’s true. |
| Erik: So, just to recap, let’s go over to the pronunciation of the two “goodbyes” that we’ve covered quickly. What’s the one that you’re using when talking to a person you don’t know. |
| Anna: Okay. The safest one to say is До свидания. |
| Erik: До свидания, I think many people know this one. |
| Anna: Right. |
| Erik: How about the one you say when you’ll see someone soon? |
| Anna: Actually you can use Пока or До встречи.. |

| Erik: And this means “goodbye forever”? |
| Anna: Well, actually yes. |
| Erik: When can you use Прощай? |
| Anna: Actually, you would use this word when you think that you’ll never see a person again. |
| Erik: Oh my. So, hopefully you don’t have to use this word too much. |
| Anna: Yeah, that’s true. |
| Erik: Kind of sad. |
| Anna: Well yes. But, we hardly say this one or maybe when you break up with your boyfriend or girlfriend. |
| Erik: Have you ever said this word, Ana? |
| Anna: It’s kind of personal. |
| Erik: Okay. |
| Anna: Well, actually we do say this word. |
| Erik: Okay. I won’t ask how many times. |
| Anna: Don’t. |
| Erik: Okay. |
