Oksana: [Здравствуйте, меня зовут Оксана]. Oksana here and the next idiom we’ll learn in this series is one of my favorites. Being a domestic and a home loving person, I can’t stop repeating it again and again even when coming back home from a best friend’s party. Let alone returning from another country. |
Oksana: The idiom is [В гостях хорошо, а дома лучше]. Literally, we can translate is as: “Visiting is good, but home is better”. |
Oksana: This is not a traditional Russian proverb, obviously, as it has its equivalents in almost every language. In English for instance, we can find such theory as in: “There is no place like home!” or “East or West, home is best!”. It’s more like a reflection of your personality, your character or maybe just an experience from which you want to escape or hide in your shelter. There is no exact translation for [в гостях] in English, but if we decide to break this phrase down, it’ll sound like: “At the visited people’s place”. Doesn’t make much sense, right? So, let’s stop and just visiting. |
Oksana: [Хорошо] literally means “good”, [а] stands for the English “and”. And then comes the key phrase of the idiom: [Дома лучше], where [дома] means “at home” and [лучше] is the word for “better”. So, once again: [В гостях хорошо, а дома лучше]. Say it at soon as you return home from visiting Russia! [До новых встреч!]. See you soon! |
