Lesson Transcript

Hi everyone! I’m Alisha.
Welcome to Conversational Phrases!
We’ve found that the best way to learn a language is to speak it from day one! And the best way to start speaking is to learn phrases that you’ll use in real conversations.
In this lesson, you’ll learn how to ask the question, "When is your birthday?" After watching this video, you’ll be able to ask and answer about the date of an event.
Now, let’s take a look at some conversational phrases!
Listen to the dialogue.
Когда у вас день рождения? (Kogda u vas den' rozhdeniya?)
4 марта. (Chetvyortogo marta.)
Once more with the English translation.
Когда у вас день рождения? (Kogda u vas den' rozhdeniya?)
“When is your birthday?”
4 марта. (Chetvyortogo marta.)
“It's on March 4th.”
First of all you'll need to learn how to say "When is [event]?"
The pattern is:
Когда [event]? (Kogda [event]?)
“When is [event]?”
For example:
Когда у вас день рождения?, Когда у вас день рождения? (Kogda u vas den' rozhdeniya?, Kogda u vas den' rozhdeniya?)
Now, how do you answer this question?
4 марта. (Chetvyortogo marta.)
Listen to it again:
4 марта., 4 марта. (Chetvyortogo marta., Chetvyortogo marta.)
This Russian sentence literally translates as "4 March." But it means "It's on March 4th.".
