Becky: Welcome to 3-Minute Russian Season 1, Lesson 12 - What are you doing? In this lesson, you’ll learn how to ask what someone is doing in Russian.

Becky: Here's the informal way to ask 'What are you doing?' in Russian.
Elena: [Normal] Что ты делаешь?(Shto ty delaesh?)
Becky: First is a word meaning 'what'
Elena: [Normal] что [Slow] что (shto)
Becky: Next is the word meaning 'you'
Elena: [Normal] ты [Slow] ты(ty)
Becky: Last is the word meaning 'are doing'
Elena: [Normal] делаешь [Slow] делаешь(delaesh )
Becky: Note the rising intonation. Listen again to the informal question meaning 'What are you doing?'
Elena: [Slow] Что ты делаешь? [Normal] Что ты делаешь?
Becky: Now, imagine you're speaking to a stranger. Here's the formal way to ask, 'What are you doing?'
Elena: [Normal] Что вы делаете?(Shto vy delayete?)

Cultural Insight
Becky: Now it's time for a quick cultural insight.
Elena: If you don't feel like giving an explanation of what you are doing, you can just say Ничего особенного, а что? (Nichevo asobennava. A shto?) which means "Nothing special. Why? (why are you asking). It is ok to use this phrase with friends and people you know. This phrase is quite polite.
