HideHello Renato,
Nice question!
The preposition "на" means "on", physically. So we cannot use it.
I would recommend you just to remember this phrase "есть за..."

Привет, меня зовут Ренато. Мой вопрос, потому это "семья есть за столом" а не "семья есть на столе"?
Hi, my name's Renato. My question is Why this is "семья есть за столом"? why not "семья есть на столе"?
Thank you, bye.
Hello Christopher,
No, "семья" is a singular noun, whereas "семьи" is plural noun. It is the same like English "family" and "families". The verb should correspond to noun in number

Why "Семья ест за столом" rather than "Семья едят за столом"? Since family is a plural unit wouldn't it be replaced by the pronoun "they/они" rather than "he/он she/она"?

its really difficult for beginner to learn vocabulary like that
Hello Rhona Hoggan,
As in Russian there are no Present Progressive and Present Simple tenses, it`s hard for me to explain when are they both used.
In Russian there is only one Present tense which is used for everything which is done in Present.

Hi. Yes, I'd like to know when to use what.
"They are dancing", for a friendly example, is clearly present progressive, isn't it?
"They dance" is present tense from what I can tell.
It's the fact that both looked identical in most of the unit (not my examples in English), and that I hadn't encountered the verb "to wake up" in Russian either, added to my confusion.
Hello Rhona Hoggan,
Could you explain in more detail what would you like to know? When do we use present tense in Russian?

Having read the notes, I'm curious about something. The "non-past" or present tense and the present progressive look identical in Russian. The translation though, is clear about which is which - present is fairly straightforward and progressive is a gerund - I believe the term is! When would you use what? Especially if there isn't much difference between them? Past tense though is straightforward, here at least.
