In today’s lesson we’ll introduce you to directions that will help you find the place you are looking for. Previously we introduced “Is there a bank near here?” and “Where is there a something?”. But while we can now ask, we haven't addressed understanding the answer. Today we’re going to work on understanding what is said. So today we’ll go over basic directions. |
First, we have “go straight”. In Russian “go straight” is “idite pryama”. Let`s break it down by syllable: i-di-te prya-ma. Now, let`s hear it once again: idite pryama. |
The first word “idite” means “go”. Let`s break down this word by syllable: i-di-te and idite. |
This is followed by “pryama”, prya-ma, which in English is “straight”. So to recap here, we have “dite pryama”, which literally means “go straight”. |
Now we’re going to work on turning. Let’s try “turn right” which in Russian is is “pavernite naprava”. Let`s hear it once again, slowly: pavernite naprava. And, we'll break it down by syllable: pa-ver-ni-te nap-ra-va, pavernite naprava. |
The first word “pavernite” means “turn”. Let`s break it down by syllable: pa-ver-ni-te, pa-ver-ni-te. The second part is “naprava”. Let`s break it down by syllable: nap-ra-va, nap-ra-va. |
Now let’s say “turn left”; in Russian it would be “pavernite naleva”. Let`s break it down by syllable: pa-ver-ni-te na-le-va, pavernite naleva. The first word “pavernite” means “turn” and the second part “naleva” means “left”. |
If you want to say “At the crossroad turn right” in Russian it would be “Na perekryostke pavernite naprava”. Let`s hear it once again: Na perekryostke pavernite naprava. |
In Russian “It’s on the right” is “Eta pa pravay starane”. Let`s break it down by syllable: Eta pa pra-vay sta-ra-ne, Eta pa pravay starane. |
The first word “eta” means “this”. “Pa pravay starane” means “on the right-hand side”. Eta pa pravay starane - It’s on the right. |
In Russian “It’s on the left” is “Eta pa levay starane”. Let`s break it down by syllable: Eta pa le-vay sta-ra-ne. Now, let`s hear it once again: Eta pa levay starane. |
The first word “eta” means “this”. Let`s break it down by syllable: e-ta. This is followed by “pa levay starane”, which in English is “left-hand side”. Eta pa levay starane. |
Ok, to close out today`s lesson we'd like for you to practice what we`d just learnt. I will provide you with the English equivalent of the phrase and you are responsible for saying it aloud. You'll have a few seconds before I`ll give you the answer. Udachi! That means “good luck”! Ok, here we go! |
go straight……..idite pryama, |
turn right…….pavernite naprava |
turn left…….pavernite naleva |
