INTRODUCTION |
Jo:Hello everyone and welcome to RussianPod101.com. This is the Upper Beginner Series, season 1, lesson 5, Getting a Checkup in Russia. |
Svetlana:And I’m Svetlana. Privet. |
Jo:In this lesson we're going to learn the most commonly used lead-in expressions in Russian, which help us to start, continue or conclude conversations. And we will also hear about how Elena is worried about her health. |
Svetlana:The conversation is between Elena and her doctor, and it takes place in the doctor’s examination room. |
Jo:Elena and the doctor will be using relatively formal Russian. |
DIALOGUE |
Doctor: Вот, заполните анкету и приготовьтесь к медицинскому осмотру. Будем вас измерять, взвешивать и осматривать. |
Elena: Ой, я немного волнуюсь. |
Doctor:Не переживайте по поводу вашего веса! Мне необходимо знать ваше общее состояние здоровья. |
Elena:Думаю, общее состояние здоровья в норме, но вот отдельные органы могут подвести. Надеюсь, всё не слишком плачевно. |
Doctor: Vot zapolnite anketu i prigotov 'tes ' k meditsinskomu osmotru. Budem vas izmeryat ', vzveshivat ' i osmatrivat '. |
Elena: Oy, ya nemnogo volnuyus '. |
Doctor:Ne perezhivayte po povodu vashego vesa! Mne neobhodimo znat ' vashe obscheye sostoyaniye zdorov 'ya. |
Elena:Dumayu, obscheye sostoyaniye zdorov 'ya v norme, no vot otdel 'niye organy mogut podvesti. Nadeyus ' vsyo ne slishkom plachevno. |
Doctor: Here, fill out this questionnaire and then we'll have the medical check up. I'll take your measurements and examine your results. |
Elena: Oh, I'm a little bit nervous. |
Doctor: Don't worry about your weight. We're just checking the general condition of your health. |
Elena: I think, in general, my health is quite good, but I'm not sure about each of my internal organs. I hope everything is okay. |
POST CONVERSATION BANTER |
Jo:Elena is about to have her medical checkup, and she seems very nervous. |
Svetlana:She doesn’t have any obvious health problems, but she still has doubts because she hasn’t had a checkup in a while. |
Jo:I would never go to the doctor unless it was for something serious! |
Svetlana:(Laughs) Are you Russian? Russians also don’t go to the doctor regularly just for checkups. |
Jo:Isn’t it also because it’s so expensive? |
Svetlana:Actually, basic medical services in Russia are free. But the quality of health care in many regions is low, because of the lack of proper specialists, medical technology and medication. This makes people want to treat their illnesses by themselves. |
Jo:And they don’t come across any problems doing that? |
Svetlana:Most of the time it’s fine. You can buy almost any medication in drug stores, or just ask Babushka. |
Jo:Babushka? |
Svetlana:Yes, grandma. She isn’t necessarily your grandma. She is just a very wise old lady who has a home recipe for all illnesses! |
Jo:I will keep that in mind. |

KEY VOCAB AND PHRASES |
Jo:Let's have a closer look at the usage for some of the words and phrases from this lesson. |
Svetlana:The first key phrase is “медицинский осмотр”. |
Jo:“Medical check up”. There is a short version for this phrase. How does it go? |
Svetlana:“медосмотр” |
The adjective “медицинский” means “medical”. The noun “осмотр” is a very useful word that can be used in many situations. For example, Осмотр достопримечательностей |
Jo:“Sightseeing” |
Svetlana:Осмотр места преступления |
Jo:“Inspection of the scene of a crime”. |
Svetlana:So the noun “осмотр” can also be translated as “examination”, “inspection”, and “sightseeing”. |
Jo:There is something else about this phrase we would like to point out – although it is the short version, it still consists of an adjective and a noun. |
Svetlana:Like in the case of медосмотр. |
Jo:Right. Can you give us more examples? |
Svetlana:Sure. We can shorten the phrase “Спортивный зал” to “спортзал”. |
Jo:“Gym” |
Svetlana:“Государственный аппарат” to “госаппарат” |
Jo:“State agency” |
Svetlana:“Авиационная почта” to “авиапочта” |
Jo:“Air mail”. And the short version is much easier to pronounce. Okay, what is the next key word? |
Svetlana:The next word is “переживать”. |
Jo:“To be nervous”. But this verb has another meaning as well, which is “to endure something”, “to go through something”, or “to overcome something”. |
Svetlana:That’s right! The prefix пере- can be translated as “through” or “over”. And the meaning of the stem -жи- is жить, |
Jo:or “to live”. |
Jo:So the literal translation for this verb would be “to live through”? Interesting. Can you give us some example sentences? |
Svetlana:Она пережила два развода. |
Jo:“She went through two divorces”. |
We actually have a synonym for this word but in the sense of “to be nervous”. |
Svetlana:Right! It is волноваться. |
Jo:“To worry”. Elena said that she is a little bit worried about her health. |
Svetlana:Yes, she said. But this verb also has a second meaning. |
Jo:Really? What is it? |
Svetlana:“To surge” especially when we are talking about the ocean. The origin of this verb is the noun волна, which means “wave”. For example |
Море волновалось и шумело. |
Jo:“The ocean waves surged loudly.” Okay, Let’s move on to the grammar. |
GRAMMAR POINT |
Jo:In this lesson we will learn about lead-in words and expressions in Russian sentences. We had a couple of examples in our dialogue when Elena was talking about her health. |
Svetlana:Yes, she used Думаю and Надеюсь. In the dialogue, she said “Думаю, общее состояние здоровья в норме” |
Jo:“I think, in general, my health is quite good.” |
Svetlana:Надеюсь, всё не слишком плачевно. |
Jo:“I hope everything is not too bad”, or in more natural English, “I hope everything is ok”. The phrases mean “I think” and “hopefully”. There are plenty of expressions like these in Russian. Let’s take a look at the ones that are most commonly used. |
Svetlana:Yeah, we’d better divide them into categories. The first one is the lead-in words to express emotions. For example- |
к счастью |
Jo:“fortunately” |
Svetlana:к радости |
Jo:“happily” |
Svetlana:к сожалению |
Jo:“unfortunately” |
Svetlana:к удивлению |
Jo:“surprisingly”. So basically any nouns related to emotions can be used. |
Svetlana:Yes. Just take the preposition K and put the noun in dative case. |
Jo:Can you give us an example sentence? |
Svetlana:Sure. Here it is. |
К счастью я встретилась в ним, до того как он ушел. |
Jo:“Luckily, I saw him before he left”. Okay, What is the next category? |
Svetlana:Next we have some lead-in words used when we identify the source of information. For example по-моему |
Jo:“As for me” or “In my opinion” |
Svetlana:по мнению друзей |
Jo:“According to my friends” |
Svetlana:по сообщению (информагентств) |
Jo:“According to the report (from the news agency)” |
Svetlana:For example, По сообщению прогноза погоды, завтра будет дождь. |
Jo:“According to the weather forecast, it’s going to rain tomorrow.” |
Okay, what is the next category? |
Svetlana:Next are words that express a level of certainty. For example, |
вероятно |
Jo:“Obviously” |
Svetlana:в самом деле |
Jo:“Actually” |
Svetlana:кажется |
Jo:“Seems like”. These are very useful phrases that we also use every day in English. Okay, what is the next category? |
Svetlana:Next are words that connect several different ideas. For example |
с одной стороны |
Jo:“On one hand” |
Svetlana:с другой стороны |
Jo:“On the other hand” |
Svetlana:кстати |
Jo:“By the way” |
Svetlana:Let me give you an example sentence. С одной стороны, это дёшево, а, с другой стороны, качество не очень хорошее. |
Jo:“On one hand it’s very cheap, but on the other hand, the quality is not very good.” |
Okay, and the final category? |
Svetlana:Our last category for this lesson is words that are used to get somebody’s attention. |
послушай/послушайте |
Jo:“Listen” |
Svetlana:представь/ представьте |
Jo:“Imagine” |
Svetlana:помнишь/ помните |
Jo:“Remember”. The first one is informal and the second one is formal. |
Svetlana:Here is the example sentence. Послушайте, ты ошибаетесь. |
Jo:“Listen, you’re wrong!” |
Okay, great! That’s it for this lesson. Don’t forget to check our lesson notes for more examples and information. |
